Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,
Change is inevitable, often necessary, and at CKc, always the goal.
Like so many of you, CKc has experienced a lot of change recently. Last month, we said goodbye to our executive director, Karen Revels, as she moved on to a new role at Junior Achievement.
This month, we are celebrating change: CANNON, whose cancer journey launched CKc, turned 10 years old! Going from single digits to DOUBLE digits is quite an achievement for any kid. But for Cannon, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 18 months and given 50/50 chance to live, it's a MONUMENTAL milestone! The reality we face is that FIVE children die each day in the U.S. from cancer. The average age at death is EIGHT years old. There is still so much work to be done. But today, we celebrate: Cannon is TEN! We are all so grateful! The goal is that ALL kids fighting cancer make it to 10, 50, even 100 birthdays. And thanks to YOU, the status quo for pediatric cancer is changing.
The team wants to show you some of your recent impact. Please scroll through and check out all that YOU are doing through CKc!

With gratitude, Valerie Solomon Interim Executive Director Cannonball Kids' cancer Foundation RESEARCH CKc-funded viral immunotherapy research shows promise against pediatric brain tumors
The findings were presented at the virtual American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2021 and published online in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the Phase 1 clinical trial of 12 patients between 7 and 18 years of age, the investigators employed a modified virus known as G207, derived from the herpes virus responsible for cold sores. The virus is genetically altered so that it infects only tumor cells. When injected into a malignant brain tumor via a catheter, the virus enters the tumor cells and replicates. This kills the cell and releases the virus progeny to hunt out other tumor cells. Additionally, the virus induces a strong response by the body’s immune system, which can attack the tumor.
CKc's Fall 2021 Grants Cycle is Underway!
Ten innovative research projects were invited to apply for funding through CKc's clinical trial, young investigator, and program grants. Applications are due on August 25th, and the scientific advisory board will review the applications and make recommendations in September. The more money we raise before then, the more research we can fund! EDUCATING FOR CHANGE House Appropriations Committee Approves CKc Report Language
Report language originally drafted by CKc was included in the House Appropriations bill which passed July 14, 2021. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the support and leadership of Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy.
Why is this important?
The Report Language approved by the House Appropriations Committee ensures all relevant data needed to assist childhood cancer researchers in developing innovative treatments for childhood cancer are made available through the National Childhood Cancer Registry and other integrated Childhood Cancer Data Initiative programs.
“The Report Language addresses a problem we have heard from both families and researchers fighting pediatric cancer,” said interim executive director, Valerie Solomon. “The families tell us the national data does not reflect their reality of pediatric cancer and researchers report the aggregate data collected on a national level is not truly accessible to them, particularly for very rare forms of childhood cancer. This report language puts on record the need for critical access to data for researchers doing the difficult work of finding less-toxic treaments for childhood cancer, and CKc is proud to partner with Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy to bring attention to this issue.” GOLD GALA UPDATE Thank you, thank you, thank you! Gold Gala donors generously gave more than $430,000 to fund innovative research options for kids and educate for change! We could not have done this without each of you, the incredible committee, and hosts who gave their time, passion, and resources to help fight childhood cancer.
