“I want to do something that will help people forever. I want to find a cure for cancer.” – Sarah Szafranski

Our Inspiration

Sarah’s Sporting Clays Against Cancer was created as a unique event to raise funds for pediatric oncology through the Sarah Szafranski Endowment Fund. In 2002, when 16-year-old Sarah Szafranski realized she was losing her three-year battle with cancer, she resolved to make a permanent contribution to the fight against pediatric cancer. She decided to create a self-sustaining endowment fund for research on pediatric cancer. She charged her father, Bob Szafranski, with starting the Sarah Szafranski Endowment Fund and growing it to $1 million.

We deeply appreciate all you have done in the past to support the fight against pediatric cancer in memory of Sarah Szafranski, the 16-year-old who had a vision of how she could continue her battle against cancer into a future she would never see. We hope you will continue to support this fight.

Generous donations made to the Sarah Szafranski Endowment Fund have been invested each year into organizations which are actively fighting pediatric cancer. Since the first event in 2014, our participants have collectively raised over $250,000, which has gone directly into the Sarah Szafranski Endowment Fund. This year, the proceeds from our event will go to Cannonball Kids’ cancer Foundation in support of innovative cancer research including Dr. Amy Smith’s work at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

Funding Local Research

Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children’s neuro-oncology healthcare team, led by Dr. Amy Smith, a nationally recognized pediatric neuro-oncologist, is made up of medical, nursing, psychosocial and research experts. Using a whole team approach, the entire family receives care personalized to their child’s diagnosis and needs.

Dr. Smith and her team partner with patients and families to make good decisions about immediate and long-term health, including enrolling patients in clinical trials when conventional means of treatment don’t receive the intended results. At the Haley Center, our expert team takes a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric healthcare − “we treat the whole child, not just the illness.”

Our benefiting charity

Cannonball Kids’ cancer Foundation’s mission is to fund innovative and accessible research for children fighting cancer to provide better treatments and quality of life, and to educate for change. Their rigorous, relationship-based, invite-only grants process ensures that 92% of CKc-funded trials are first-of-their-kind in the US. To date, CKc has awarded $2.4 million funding 24 research grants, including two in Central Florida, creating 593 options for treatment for children in 25 states, DC, Canada, Scotland, and Switzerland.
