Julia Cox Cold Sore Therapy for Relapsed Brain Tumors

Project Title

Phase I Clinical Trial of HSV G207 Alone or With a Single Radiation Dose in Children With Recurrent Supratentorial Brain Tumors

Layman’s summary

This is a viral oncolytic therapy that is a first-in-children, using surgery to administer a one-time, targeted dose of modified herpes (cold sore) directly into a brain tumor in the upper part of the brain. The oncolytic effect of the virus and the immune response that the virus stimulates provide a one-two punch at attacking cancer cells. This therapy was previously developed and safely tested at UAB on adults, and Dr. Friedman has made it available to children. The CKc grant helped expand the trial to a second site at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to reach more children with little to no options for treatment.
